Build, install and run Hadoop 2.4 (2.4.0) on Windows 8 (64bit)

In short, the steps are:
  • Install Java (jdk 7)
  • Install Cygwin
  • Copy Hadoop 2.4 source code to Cygwin
  • Build Hadoop source in Cygwin
  • Set up Hadoop environment in Windows
  • Run Hadoop in Windows
Note: You can download Hadoop Windows native binaries (dll and exe, amd64 build) from my github repository: https://github.com/Zutai/HadoopOnWindows/tree/master/NativeDllAndExe.

Following are detailed steps:

Install JDK 7

Download OpenJDK 7 Window amd64 build from: https://github.com/alexkasko/openjdk-unofficial-builds#openjdk-unofficial-installers-for-windows-linux-and-mac-os-x

Uncompress it, copy and rename the directory to C:\app\jdk1.7.

Set JAVA_HOME=C:\app\jdk1.7, Path=...;C:\app\jdk1.7\bin in system variables.

Install Cygwin 64 bit

Install it to C:\cygwin64, with following extra components:

Devel: binutils
Devel: make, automake, cmake
Interpreters: m4
Utils: cpio
Base: gawk
Interpreters: gawk
Base: base-files, file
Devel: file-devel
Archive: zip, unzip
Base: gzip
System: procps

Upper components in Cygwin may not be needed all. But I just installed them. I got the idea from requirements to build OpenJDK on Windows: http://hg.openjdk.java.net/jdk7/jdk7/raw-file/tip/README-builds.html

Set up Cygwin

Download Apache Maven 3.2.1 binaries, copy to C:\cygwin64\usr\local\apache-maven-3.2.1.

Download Google Protocol Buffer windows binary, copy protoc.exe to C:\cygwin64\usr\local\bin.

Edit .bashrc file (C:\cygwin64\home[YourUser].bashrc), adding following:

export JAVA_HOME=/cygdrive/c/App/jdk1.7
export M2_HOME=/usr/local/apache-maven-3.2.1
export HADOOP_PROTOC_PATH=/usr/local/bin
export PATH=$PATH:$JAVA_HOME/bin:$M2_HOME/bin:/cygdrive/c/Windows/Microsoft.NET/Framework/v4.0.30319
export Platform=x64

Now open Cygwin window, run mvn and protoc to verify:

$ mvn -version
Apache Maven 3.2.1 (ea8b2b07643dbb1b84b6d16e1f08391b666bc1e9; 2014-02-14T09:37:52-08:00)
Maven home: C:\cygwin64\usr\local\apache-maven-3.2.1
Java version: 1.7.0-u60-unofficial, vendor: Oracle Corporation
Java home: C:\App\jdk1.7\jre
Default locale: en_US, platform encoding: Cp1252
OS name: "windows 8.1", version: "6.3", arch: "amd64", family: "windows"

$ protoc --version
libprotoc 2.5.0

Build Hadoop 2.4.0 source

Download Hadoop 2.4.0 source code and copy it to C:\cygwin64\usr\local\hadoop-2.4.0-src.

In Cygwin, go to C:\cygwin64\usr\local\hadoop-2.4.0-src, run: mvn compile

You might hit error like following:

[INFO] ------------------------------------------------------------------------
[INFO] BUILD FAILURE
[INFO] ------------------------------------------------------------------------
[INFO] Total time: 11:53 min
[INFO] Finished at: 2014-06-19T23:13:05-08:00

If you hit upper error, you can manually set protocCommand to "C:\cygwin64\usr\local\bin\protoc.exe" in file C:\cygwin64\usr\local\hadoop-2.4.0-src\hadoop-maven-plugins\src\main\java\org\apache\hadoop\maven\plugin\protoc\ProtocMojo.java:

  public void execute() throws MojoExecutionException {
    try {
      if (protocCommand == null || protocCommand.trim().isEmpty()) {
        protocCommand = "protoc";
      }

      protocCommand = "C:\\cygwin64\\usr\\local\\bin\\protoc.exe";
    ...
  }

Then, re-run mvn compile, you probably will hit new error:

[INFO] --- exec-maven-plugin:1.2:exec (compile-ms-winutils) @ hadoop-common ---

To resolve upper error, you can install Microsoft Visual Studio Express 2012, and manually build the sln projects.

Open C:\cygwin64\usr\local\hadoop-2.4.0-src\hadoop-common-project\hadoop-common\src\main\winutils\winutils.sln in Visual Studio Express 2012. Change the build configuration to Release x64. Then you will be able to build the projects (libwinutils, winutils) inside the solution.
After building the sln in Visual Studio, re-run mvn to build Hadoop in Cygwin. You might hit another similar error:

[INFO] --- exec-maven-plugin:1.2:exec (compile-ms-native-dll) @ hadoop-common ---

Done Building Project "C:\cygwin64\usr\local\hadoop-2.4.0-src\hadoop-common-project\hadoop-common\src\main\native\native.sln" (default targets) -- FAILED.

Again, you can open the sln in Visual Studio and build there (remember to change build configuration to Release x64).

Finally you will get mvn compile running successfully. Check your directory: C:\cygwin64\usr\local\hadoop-2.4.0-src\hadoop-common-project\hadoop-common\target\bin. It should contains:

hadoop.dll
hadoop.exp
hadoop.lib
hadoop.pdb
libwinutils.lib
winutils.exe
winutils.pdb

If you see upper dll and exe. Congratulation! You are ready to run Hadoop on Windows now!

Set up Hadoop environment in Windows

I got Hadoop build successfully with "mvn compile", but still got test failure when using commenad "mvn package". Thus I decided to download Hadoop 2.4.0 distribution from Apache Hadoop release download page, and use it together with the native binaries I build on my local machine. Then I got Hadoop running successfully on my Windows 8. Following are the details.

(Or, you can run "mvn package -Pdist,native-win -DskipTests -Dtar" to skip test, and you will get your local build at:
C:\cygwin64\usr\local\hadoop-2.4.0-src\hadoop-dist\target\hadoop-2.4.0.)

Download, uncompress and copy Hadoop 2.4.0 distribution to C:\app\hadoop-2.4.0. Copy native binaries (hadoop.dll, winutils.exe) from local Hadoop build (C:\app\hadoop-2.4.0\bin) to Hadoop distribution (C:\cygwin64\usr\local\hadoop-2.4.0-src\hadoop-common-project\hadoop-common\target\bin).

Add Hadoop bin and sbin to PATH system variable: PATH=...;C:\app\hadoop-2.4.0\bin;C:\app\hadoop-2.4.0\sbin.

Add system variable HADOOP_INSTALL=C:\app\hadoop-2.4.0.

Edit or create following configure files:

C:\app\hadoop-2.4.0\etc\hadoop\core-site.xml
<configuration>
<property>
  <name>fs.default.name</name>
  <value>hdfs://localhost/</value>
</property>
</configuration>

C:\app\hadoop-2.4.0\etc\hadoop\hdfs-site.xml
<configuration>
<property>
  <name>dfs.replication</name>
  <value>1</value>
</property>
</configuration>

C:\app\hadoop-2.4.0\etc\hadoop\mapred-site.xml
<configuration>
  <property>
    <name>mapreduce.framework.name</name>
    <value>yarn</value>
  </property>
</configuration>

C:\app\hadoop-2.4.0\etc\hadoop\yarn-site.xml
<configuration>
<property>
  <name>yarn.nodemanager.aux-services</name>
  <value>mapreduce_shuffle</value>
</property>
</configuration>

Now open a command window in administrator mode. You should be able to format hdfs via: hdfs namenode -format.

Run Hadoop on Windows

In previous section you will be able to run "hdfs namenode -format" to format HDFS. Then use following commands to start Hadoop processes:

start-dfs
start-yarn

Now, enjoy your Hadoop on Windows!

Feel free to discuss any other issues you hit.

  2. Hi Brahma, I was on vacation and just get chance to look at this. Can you search "v120" in your vcxproj file, and change it to "v110"? If that does not work, you may need Visual Studio 2013 to build your solution since "v120" seems to be Visual Studio 2013. I am not sure how you get that in your vcxproj.

    If you resolve the issue, would you share as well :)

    2. Hi JavaRocks,

      I searched your error message, and found this: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/16092169/why-does-msbuild-look-in-c-for-microsoft-cpp-default-props-instead-of-c-progr

      Did you try that?

      Also, my post was based on hadoop 2.4.0, and I haven't tried building hadoop 2.6.0 on Windows yet. So, if you finally fix your problem, please also share your experience with us.

      Thanks,

      By the way, which version of Hadoop did you use? I was using 2.4.0 when I was writing this blog. Now Hadoop has come up with 2.6 and 2.7. I haven't try that yet. Thus curious whether the steps here are still applicable to 2.6.0 or 2.7.0.
